English for Speakers of Other Languages
A unique partnership between two Tipton schools and Sandwell College has created a thriving community outreach English class for local parents. Using facilities at Victoria Infant School and the brand new building at Tipton Green Primary School, the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes prepare local parents to communicate competently in English. Classes are offered from entry level through to advanced levels, and are designed with local parents’ needs in mind.
As part of the program, the classes are designed to develop all areas of language – speaking, listening comprehension, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation. Emphasis is on teaching and learning practical language skills that are necessary at home, in the community, and on the job. Using the new school’s state of the art community facilities, we are able to offer students access to learning in a local, friendly environment. There is close communication between staff at both schools to ensure that any vulnerable family needs within the group are met. Parents with young children are able to access a Victoria Infant School funded crèche for childcare during classes.
The length of the program is based upon individual needs. As an open-entry/open-exit program, there is the flexibility to enter and exit the program when individual needs have been met.
The learning atmosphere is dedicated to adult learners, with a highly qualified tutor from Sandwell College who specializes in teaching ESOL. Parents have access to a variety of learning materials, including computers and software to enhance reading and speaking skills. The classes are making a real difference in the schools’ community, with parents feeling more confident to help their children with homework to support learning in school. They are also able to socialize with other parents from different cultures and backgrounds, forging closer cohesion within the playground and community.
