Tipton Green Junior School

Year Profile...

Introduction

Welcome to Year 5 at Tipton Green Junior School. In the three classes this year there are approximately 30 children each.

This year's Year 5 staff are Miss Wardd - 5NW, Miss Wilkinson - 5GW and Miss Dawson - 5ED.

In year 5, the three core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Science are covered along with ICT and the foundation subjects. Each term we base some of our work on a particular theme.

We encourage children to complete regular pieces of homework, as well a regular reading practice at home. By year 5, they should already have a sound knowledge of all the multiplication tables up to 10 X 10 as these form the basis for a lot of the work undertaken in numeracy.

On Friday afternoons all children in Years 5 take part in curriculum enrichment activities, under the supervision of our dedicated support staff and also some outside agencies. They will be learning how to ride a bicycle safely, play chess, take part in various craft activities, participate in musical activities, learn another language etc.

On Monday and Friday mornings year 5 have P.E. As they will also be expected to participate in P.E activities, it is imperative that they have appropriate kit in school. It is a legal requirement that all children take part in P.E. activities unless there is a prescribed medical reason preventing this.

They will also be taken to the local swimming pool for swimming tuition and should be provided with suitable swimming kit (not two-piece costumes), a swimming cap to be worn over long hair which should also be tied back, and discouraged from wearing any earrings on days when they are swimming. We like to think that our children look smart at all times so wearing school uniform on all days is encouraged. Sometimes on charity days, children are allowed to wear more casual clothing but they are informed when this is appropriate.
