Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles Workshop š„¦šš§š
Year 3 and Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic Healthy Eating Workshop delivered by the School Nursing Team. The informative sessions helped the children develop their understanding of how the food and drink choices we make, alongside being physically active, can help us to stay healthy, strong and full of energy.
The children began by learning about the importance of hydration. They discussed why our bodies need water throughout the day and how keeping hydrated can help us to concentrate, stay active and feel our best. They also learnt why water is a healthier everyday choice than drinks containing lots of sugar.
The children then explored what makes a healthy, balanced diet. They learnt that our bodies need a variety of different foods and that different food groups have different roles in keeping us healthy. As part of the session, the children enjoyed sorting different foods into groups, including carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, oils and fats, and foods containing sugar.
They also learnt about creating a balanced plate and considered the different types of food our bodies need. The children discussed why some foods should make up a larger part of our diet, while foods that are high in sugar and fat should be eaten less often and in smaller amounts.
Another important part of the workshop focused on food labels. The School Nursing Team explained how the information on food packaging can help us make informed choices. The children learnt about the traffic-light system and what the š¢ green, š” amber and š“ red colours can tell us about the amounts of sugar, fat and salt in foods.
The children were particularly interested to learn about sugar and how some foods and drinks can contain more sugar than we might expect. They discussed how regularly having too much sugar can affect our health and our teeth.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. The children learnt that being active helps to keep our hearts, muscles and bones strong, as well as supporting our overall health and wellbeing. They discussed lots of different ways to keep active, from walking, running and playing outside to dancing, swimming, cycling and taking part in sports.
At the end of the workshop, every child received a certificate to celebrate their participation and learning. They were also given some useful resources to take home so that they can continue thinking about healthy choices with their families. This included their own balanced plate activity, where they can have a go at designing a healthy, balanced meal using everything they have learnt during the session. š½ļøš„š„¦
A huge thank you to the School Nursing Team for visiting our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils and delivering such an engaging and informative workshop. The children came away with lots of useful knowledge about how eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated and being physically active can all work together to help us lead happy and healthy lives. š
