We were delighted to welcome our dads and special male role models to our Father's Day celebration today. It was wonderful to see so many families spending quality time together and making special memories. Year 5 have been exploring the relative sizes of the planets in our solar system using play dough and rulers. The children were amazed by how little matter Mercury has compared to the other planets! They found dividing the play-dough "sausage" into fifths quite challenging, as there was so little to work with. It was wonderful to see great measuring skills, problem-solving, and perseverance in action throughout the lesson.

Children participated in a fun Digital Art workshop using IPads today which was kindly led by Mr Ashton from Engagedu. We have some fantastic artists in Year 5! Children used the app Sketch Book and investigated with a variety of colours and textures. They also learnt how to create a multi-layered image! Year 5 have begun their exciting new art topic: Cakes! This week, the children used charcoal pencils to produce observational drawings of a variety of cakes, carefully experimenting with texture, line and tone to bring their sketches to life.

Year 5 have enjoyed developing their silk painting skills through the study of Daniel Jean-Baptiste. Using his vibrant tropical artwork as inspiration, they created their own striking animal scenes filled with colour and creativity.

Year 5 are bringing their learning on life cycles to life by caring for their very own caterpillars. Over the coming weeks, they will observe the fascinating transformation as the caterpillars grow, form chrysalises, and eventually emerge as butterflies. This hands-on experience is a fantastic way to deepen their understanding of life cycles and witness nature in action.

In Year 5 Science, children explored plant reproduction through a hands-on investigation. They carefully dissected a tulip, identifying and examining the different parts of the plant involved in reproduction, such as the petals, anther and stigma. This practical activity helped bring their learning to life, allowing them to see first-hand how each part plays a role in the plant’s life cycle.

As part of their Raging Rivers Geography topic, Year 5 visited Carding Mill Valley to explore river features in a real-life setting. The children took part in a guided walk, a river study and river dipping, supported by National Trust volunteers.
