During our first Gardening Club session, we focused on clearing and preparing the space ready for planting. The children worked together enthusiastically to help transform the area into a welcoming garden space. Some children weeded around the apple tree, carefully removing unwanted plants to give new growth the best chance to thrive, while others prepared the raised planters so we can begin growing a variety of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in the coming weeks.
One of the planters will be dedicated to wildflowers to encourage bees, butterflies, and other pollinators into our garden area, helping to support local wildlife and teach children about the importance of caring for the environment. The children enjoyed learning about how gardens attract insects and why pollinators are essential for plant growth.
We also made excellent use of donated materials to continue creating our sensory path. Tyres were filled with a variety of natural textures including grass, slate, pebbles, stones, twigs, pine cones, logs, dried cuttings, and soil. This will provide children with opportunities to explore different textures, balance carefully, and enjoy sensory experiences outdoors.
The beautiful weather made the session even more enjoyable, and the children were excited to spend time working outside together. Everyone showed fantastic enthusiasm, teamwork, and creativity throughout the afternoon. The children are already looking forward to next week when they will be able to begin planting vegetables and continue developing our garden area.
