Year 4 enjoyed an exciting and immersive Roman Day, where they stepped back in time to experience life in Roman Britain. Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of engaging activities that brought their history learning to life and helped deepen their understanding of the Roman Empire.
One of the highlights of the day was learning about Roman numerals. The children explored how the Romans represented numbers using letters and practised reading and writing them. They discovered that Roman numerals are still used today in many places, particularly on traditional clock faces. For example, I = 1, V = 5, X = 10 and XII = 12, and they enjoyed spotting these numerals on different clocks while discussing where else they might be found.
The children also created an informative leaflet about Roman life, showcasing everything they have learnt throughout this half term. They included facts about Roman soldiers, Roman homes, food, clothing, entertainment, baths, roads and the lasting impact the Romans had on Britain.
To explore Roman art and culture, the children used mosaic tiles to create colourful patterns, inspired by the intricate designs found in Roman villas. They carefully arranged the tiles to produce eye-catching mosaics, learning about the importance of this art form in Roman life. They also designed and made impressive Roman shields, thinking carefully about the symbols, colours and patterns that Roman soldiers would have used in battle.
Roman Day was a wonderful opportunity for the children to apply everything they have learnt this half term in a fun, practical and memorable way. It was fantastic to see everyone fully engaged, developing their historical knowledge while enjoying a range of creative, hands-on activities.
