Year 4 Design and Technology – Levers and Linkages!
Year 4 have been busy putting their creativity and engineering skills to the test in their Design and Technology lessons!
As part of our Levers and Linkages unit, the children have been exploring how different mechanisms work and how they can be used to create movement.
Throughout the unit, the children investigated a range of mechanisms, including reverse motion, parallel motion, push-pull, bell crank and lazy-tong linkages. They enjoyed experimenting with these mechanisms and discovering how they could make different parts move.
The children then put their new knowledge into practice by designing and creating their very own interactive book pages! We linked this exciting project to our Science learning about the human digestive system.
Each child designed and made a page for an interactive book, using levers and linkages to create moving parts that helped explain different aspects of digestion. They carefully planned their designs, selected suitable mechanisms and thought about how to make their pages both informative and engaging for the reader.
Using card, split pins and other materials, the children practised their cutting, joining and assembling skills to bring their ideas to life. They also considered how to make their pages colourful, attractive and easy to use.
Finally, the children shared their completed pages, evaluated their designs and reflected on what worked well and what they could improve.
We have been so impressed with the children's creativity, problem-solving skills, perseverance and attention to detail. It was fantastic to see them applying their Science knowledge in such a practical and imaginative way!
Well done, Year 4 – we certainly have some budding designers and engineers!
