School Nurses Promote Sun Safety

Today, two school nurses set up an informative and interactive sun safety stand in the school playground to provide help, advice, and support to children and parents about staying safe in the sun. The colourful display attracted lots of interest and helped raise awareness about the importance of protecting skin during the warmer months.

The nurses spoke with children and families about the dangers of overexposure to the sun and shared practical tips on how to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer. They discussed the importance of wearing sunscreen with a high SPF, protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, as well as seeking shade during the hottest parts of the day and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated.

The stand featured eye-catching posters, educational materials, sun safety facts, and examples of sun-protective clothing and accessories. Children enjoyed learning about the “Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide” message: Slip on protective clothing, Slop on sunscreen, Slap on a hat, Seek shade, and Slide on sunglasses.

Parents had the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance on choosing and applying sunscreen correctly, protecting children during outdoor activities, and encouraging healthy sun-safe habits at home. The nurses also shared information to help families understand common myths and facts about sun protection.

The event was a great success, with many children and parents stopping by to learn more. By bringing the sun safety stand into the playground today, the school nursing team helped promote healthy lifestyles and encouraged families to take simple steps to stay safe while enjoying the sunshine.
