Year 4 SPARKS Safety Session with West Midlands Fire Brigade

July 2025

Year 4 recently took part in a valuable SPARKS safety session led by the West Midlands Fire Brigade. The session covered a range of essential life skills, focusing on fire safety, road safety, water safety, and home safety.

🔥 Fire Safety

Pupils learned how quickly a fire can spread — in just three minutes, a room can be completely engulfed in flames. They discussed the dangers of leaving electrical items plugged in and the importance of having working smoke alarms at home. Through videos, photos, and diagrams, they saw how fast a small spark can become a serious danger, and learned what to do in case of a fire.

💧 Water Safety

The session also raised awareness about how to stay safe around water. Children learned the risks of swimming in open water like lakes or rivers, especially where there may be strong currents or hidden dangers. They were reminded never to go into deep water alone and to always let an adult know where they are. The importance of wearing life jackets and knowing how to get help in an emergency was also discussed.

🚦 Road Safety

Pupils explored key road safety rules, such as using pedestrian crossings, looking both ways before stepping into the road, and wearing bright or reflective clothing when it's dark. The session also covered the importance of wearing a seat-belt in the car and staying alert when walking near busy roads.

The children came away from the session with a deeper understanding of how to keep themselves and others safe in everyday situations. A big thank you to the West Midlands Fire Brigade for such an engaging and informative experience.
