Year 4 Explores Sikh Faith and Community at Guru Nanak Gurdwara

Wednesday 9th July 2025

Year 4 had a fascinating and enriching trip to the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick, one of the largest Sikh temples in the UK. The visit gave children a wonderful opportunity to learn about Sikh beliefs, traditions, and community values in a real-life setting.

As they entered the Gurdwara, the children were warmly welcomed and shown the main prayer hall, where they listened to peaceful and moving live music performed by Sikh musicians. This music is known as kirtan – hymns from the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, set to classical Indian music. The atmosphere was calm and respectful, and the children were fascinated by the instruments and the singing.

Next, they explored different parts of the Gurdwara, including other halls used for prayers, meditation, and community gatherings. They learnt that Sikh worship involves not only prayer and music, but also serving others selflessly, which is a key principle in the Sikh faith.

One of the most memorable parts of the visit was experiencing the Langar. This is a free community kitchen found in every Gurdwara, where hot meals are prepared and served to everyone, regardless of religion, background, or status. The children were amazed to learn that the food is cooked and served by volunteers, and that everyone sits on the floor together to eat, showing equality and humility. Some children even had the chance to taste the Langar, enjoying a simple, nutritious vegetarian meal.

Throughout the trip, Year 4 students asked thoughtful questions and showed great respect for the Sikh traditions. They learned about equality, service, and devotion, and how these values are lived out daily in the Sikh community.

This visit helped bring their Religious Education learning to life and gave them a deeper appreciation of diversity, inclusion, and respect for others.
